Repair a damaged large-current slip ring (emergency)

Sand out and re-finish a large-current slip ring surface damaged by an obstacle, as an emergency measure when full replacement isn't the immediate option.

Applies to
Aquilion 16 (TSX-101A) — Gantry mechanism, source volume 2D201-061
Personnel
1 technician · Intermediate — direct mechanical rework of the ring surface itself: vacuuming abraded material, disconnecting and removing the brush assembly, progressive dry-sanding of the damaged ring area through two sandpaper grits to a smooth finish, an alcohol clean, then remounting and aligning the brush assemblies with the brush alignment jig (BSX77-4283). No torque value or part number is given in this section beyond the sandpaper grain specification and the alignment jig part number (skill assessment derived from procedure content — not an OEM-stated skill level).

Safety

DANGER

Hazard: High voltage present in the slip ring and the brushes

Consequence: Electric shock

Avoidance: Turn OFF all the breakers on the distribution board before touching the slip ring or the brushes

NOTICE

Hazard: Mishandling the ring, cover, or brush assemblies while cleaning/repairing them — using sandpaper on brush burrs, forcing the cover against the ring, rough handling of the brushes, abraded material left to fall into the gantry, off-center brush mounting, or a miswired cable

Consequence: Abnormal brush wear (if sandpaper grains enter the brushes), a damaged ring surface, damaged or broken brushes, contamination inside the gantry, or a misaligned/miswired brush assembly

Avoidance: Remove brush burrs with a cutter only — never sandpaper; take care not to force the ring when removing the cover; handle the brushes carefully and trim only their burrs; vacuum/contain abraded material so none falls into the gantry; center the brush assemblies on the ring when mounting; verify the cable is connected correctly
