Clean the large-current slipring and brush assemblies

Vacuum and de-burr the large-current slip ring, its four brush assemblies, and the surrounding covers and cables, then close out with a local-mode rotation test — the routine service that keeps abraded carbon-brush material from shorting the LCSR.

Applies to
Aquilion 16 (TSX-101A) — Gantry mechanism, source volume 2D201-061
Personnel
1 technician · Intermediate — killing the gantry rotation- and stationary-section breakers before touching the ring/brushes, removing three gantry covers (Mylar ring, rear cover, dome cover), marking and pulling all four brush assemblies so each goes back in the same position and orientation, vacuuming abraded carbon-brush material out of the insulating sheet/holders/brackets/ring groove/R-support mold/MUDAT metal section/shunt cables, judging brush wear and burrs by eye and trimming with a cutter (never sandpaper), remounting to a specified 20 mm screw length and a 4.4 N·m torque spec using the brush alignment jig (BSX77-4283), and closing out with a local-mode rotation test at three tilt angles. No electrical test equipment beyond the torque wrench and a ruler is called out (skill assessment derived from procedure content — not an OEM-stated skill level).

Safety

DANGER

Hazard: High voltage present in the slip ring and the brushes

Consequence: Electric shock

Avoidance: Turn OFF all the breakers on the distribution board before it becomes necessary to touch the slip ring or the brushes

NOTICE

Hazard: Cleaning abraded brush material with alcohol; source labels this call-out "CAUTION" — reclassified NOTICE here because the stated outcome is an LCSR short circuit, not personal injury

Consequence: Abraded brush material solidifies in the slip ring groove, causing an LCSR short circuit

Avoidance: Do not use alcohol to clean the abraded brush material

NOTICE

Hazard: Mishandling the ring, cover, or brushes during this cleaning procedure — using sandpaper on brush burrs, forcing the cover against the ring, rough handling of the fragile brushes, abraded material left to fall into the gantry, off-center brush mounting, or a miswired cable; source labels this call-out "CAUTION" — reclassified NOTICE here because every listed outcome is equipment/procedure-quality, not personal injury

Consequence: Abnormal brush wear (if sandpaper grains enter the brushes), a damaged ring, damaged or broken brushes, contamination inside the gantry, or a misaligned/miswired brush assembly

Avoidance: Remove brush burrs with a cutter only — never sandpaper; take care not to force the ring when removing a cover; handle the brushes carefully and trim only their burrs; keep abraded material (powder) from falling into the gantry; center the brush assemblies on the ring using the alignment jig; verify the cable is connected correctly

CAUTION

Hazard: Abraded slip-ring brush material (carbon brushes containing a metallic element) generated throughout this cleaning procedure; source labels this call-out "NOTE" — reclassified CAUTION here as a personal-health precaution, not an equipment-only one

Consequence: Inhaling airborne abraded brush material

Avoidance: Thoroughly ventilate the work area and take protective measures such as wearing a protective mask before starting

NOTICE

Hazard: Performing other check/cleaning work with the dome cover removed after this cleaning procedure, without completing step (12) onward; source repeats this call-out twice — before step 1 and again after step 11

Consequence: Foreign matter such as dust or screw shavings falls on the ring, possibly resulting in slip ring discharge

Avoidance: Perform all of the check items described in step (12) onward of this procedure any time the dome cover is left off for other work

NOTICE

Hazard: A brush worn unevenly, left untrimmed before brush alignment; source labels this call-out "CAUTION" — reclassified NOTICE here as an equipment-only outcome

Consequence: A projection can form on the brush, resulting in a short circuit

Avoidance: Remove the projection using a cutter so the brush surface is even before performing brush alignment

NOTICE

Hazard: Using sandpaper to correct unevenness on a worn brush; source labels this call-out "CAUTION" — reclassified NOTICE here as an equipment-only outcome

Consequence: Sandpaper grains entering the brushes causes abnormal brush wear

Avoidance: Never use sandpaper to correct brush unevenness — use a cutter only

NOTICE

Hazard: Using a brush assembly mounting screw longer than specified; source labels this call-out "CAUTION" — reclassified NOTICE here as an equipment-only outcome

Consequence: Reduced clearance between the screw and the slip ring, possibly causing an LCSR short circuit

Avoidance: Use only the specified mounting screw (*6B6-20SDM, 20 mm long, fitted with SW6 and 2W6), confirmed with a ruler
