Safety
Hazard: Touching the slip ring or brushes while the distribution board breakers are ON
Consequence: Electric shock — high voltage is present in the slip ring and brush section
Avoidance: Turn OFF ALL breakers on the distribution board before touching the slip ring or brushes for any part of this task
Hazard: Removing burrs from the brushes with sandpaper
Consequence: Abrasive grains enter the brush and cause abnormal brush wear
Avoidance: Remove burrs only with a cutter; never use sandpaper on the brushes
Hazard: Forcing or levering against the slip ring while removing covers
Consequence: Damage to the slip ring
Avoidance: Remove covers without applying force to the slip ring
Hazard: Rough handling of the fragile brushes, or trimming beyond the burrs
Consequence: Broken or damaged brush
Avoidance: Handle brushes carefully; use the cutter only to remove burrs, nothing more
Hazard: Abraded carbon/metal brush powder falling inside the gantry
Consequence: Contamination inside the gantry
Avoidance: Take care not to let abraded brush material fall into the gantry while working
Hazard: Brush holder mounted so the brush sliding surface extends beyond the ring
Consequence: Improper brush-to-ring contact after reassembly
Avoidance: Mount the brush holder so the sliding surface stays within the ring, not beyond it
Hazard: Airborne carbon/metal brush dust generated while servicing the brushes
Consequence: Inhalation exposure
Avoidance: Ventilate the work area thoroughly and wear a protective mask before starting
