Log Entries in /var/log/messages Bear a Future Date/Time Stamp.
Symptom
Log Entries in /var/log/messages Bear a Future Date/Time Stamp See Long Description An OnLine Engineer was troubleshooting a software or computer problem on an Excite II system (Linux computer). In viewing the log entries in /var/log/messages it was noticed that the log entries bore a future date/time stamp, about seven hours into the future. The current date/time was checked and it was correct. We then suspected someone at the site had altered the time, then changed it back, as no one else from the OLC had logged in. (Furthermore, there were a few log entries mixed in that bore the correct date/time). Could this have happened or is there another explanation? It is important when troubleshooting to be able to correlate the time in this log with real events.
