Voxtool (IVI) Control Panel Doesn't Come Up due to Software Problem
Symptom
Voxtool (IVI) Control Panel Doesn't Come Up See Long Description Reference Trackwise PR # 4100509. This pertains to software version: DV22.0_V02_1122.a. There are no controls on the left side of the screen for the customer to be able to perform the reformat functions. Problem Statement Tools missing on Control Panel in IVI for Nuevo system DV22 Investigation 25 Feb 2011: Nishant jha from AW team notified the issue and investigation began. 28 Feb 2011: AW team tried to reproduce this issue and unable to do so initially as the issue comes once in a while and there were not clear workflows scenario provided to the team. AW team requested FEs provide particular scenarios when this issue can be reproduced, and the sites where issue has been seen. 1 March 2011: AW team notified that the issue is coming once or twice in a week at busy sites, when the user does switch between the viewer and Volume Viewer protocols (IVI). At the time of desktop switch, the control panel is sometimes not able to load the tools and hence not able to exit directly. There is a way to exit using the Nuevo platform. The issue is intermittent in nature and is reproduced once in 200 times. AW team was able to reproduce the scenario two times in-house. 3 March 2011: Nishant from the AW team started analyzing the voxtool log files, and the system log files obtained from the sites where the issue was reported. Based on this analysis of logs, it was found that the Control panel part (Java) of IVI is in hang state during the issue. On further analysis provided the information that there are threads, which are in deadlock state and waiting for each other to complete. Here are the investigation details: 1) There are Java threads waiting for each other causing the deadlock state. Because of this deadlock condition in the java threads, all the tools on the control panel do not appear ,and It appears as an IVI UI freeze for the end user. 2) The threads in waiting state are part of the core java ‘ColorChooser’ swing component. This component causes hang state when it is instantiated by using its constructor, JColorChooser. The issue is possible only in a multithreaded application and very intermittent 3) The JavaColorChooser bug is well known in Java ( http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6419354) and is related to the HSBChooserPanel of the java.swing.JColorChooser component in a multithreaded environment. 4) The solution is to replace the HSBChooserPanel with the RGBChooserPanel. With the RGBChooserPanel component, Java threads do not wait infinitely 5) With the use of RGBChooserPanel, the application is working correctly with multithreading without any UI freeze, or missing tools on the control panel. To confirm there are no further issues related with the hang, Nishant tested the above mentioned changes on an MR system several times in-house and was not able to reproduce it. The left right look performed by Nishant for the different MR releases both on HD line and DV line to confirmed that the problem exists there also.
